Well it took a full 16 hours of flights and layovers but I'm finally here! My first flight from SFO to TXL (Berlin, Germany) was 11 hours full of movies. I believe I watched a total of five movies, but now I can't remember because they've all blurred together. All I remember is that my favorite was The Accountant with Ben Affleck and Anna Kendrick - it was an absolutely amazing movie! While I sat around in the Berlin airport for 4 hours I found a drink that rivals (if not beats) Martinelli's Sparkling Apple Cider, and it is called Lift Apfelschorle. My next flight to Vienna was short but eventful - the turbulence was unreal, but apparently it is pretty normal coming into this city. I asked some of my other friends who are already here, and they said they had a rough entry as well. The only time I went through customs was when I entered Europe in Berlin and it was probably the easiest customs I've ever been to because there was a short line, the officer who looked over my papers didn't ask a single question and just waved me on my merry way.
My friend Armin was waiting for me right outside the baggage claim, and it was easy to spot him because of his OSU Beavers shirt and hat! We met when he studied over at my school, so it was nice keeping in contact over the summer and learning more about Vienna and the school from someone who lives there. Together he helped me get a OBB Train ticket to the city, and then the metro to my apartment. My building is called Tigergasse and is on a quaint side street in a nice neighborhood. It is down the street from a lot of grocery stores, bakeries, and great shopping areas! The apartment itself is very nice because of all the amenities they have for international students. We were given all the bed sheets, pillows, a bunch of kitchen supplies, and lots of storage. After unpacking I took a much need half hour snooze, woke up feeling like death, and entered into the world looking for food. I attempted to withdraw some euros from an ATM in a grocery store, failed the first time, took a lap around looking at the food, and then tried again (and succeeded)! Then I got myself a baguette and a stick of salami, ate it at home, took a shower and finally felt like a normal human being. I also met my roommate, Annette, who is from southern Germany studying at the University of Vienna (the other Wien college) for her masters in History. She has lived in this apartment for three years, so I only slightly feel like I'm intruding... Luckily she already has a lot of cooking gear and cleaning supplies so we are set!
Not much was accomplished today because of my jetlag, but hey, just getting into the country and my apartment with no problems is a plus for me!! Some sucky iPhone photos are all I am posting today because I didn't want to lug around my camera while also carrying my luggage as well. That'll change for upcoming posts though. Tomorrow I have a long day of actual grocery shopping, lots of paperwork, and exploring the city! As I'm posting this I realized I have been awake for a little less than 30 hours, so I need some SLEEP!
And for some reason my laptop has automatically translated most text into German, so I need to fix that...
